What the higher tier adds

This tier holds the value tier and adds four kinds of optic: image-stabilized binoculars, the Alpen Apex Steady 14x42 and 16x30; rangefinder binoculars, the Alpen Apex XP and Chisos 10x42 LRF; Athlon's Ares G2 UHD spotting scopes; and day/night vision from Luna, with Guide's TE421 thermal monocular. Compact pairs widen too, with Kite's Lynx HD+ 8x30 and 10x30.

Choosing by use

Glass

UHD glass runs through Athlon's Cronus G2, Midas G2 and Argos G2 UHD binoculars and the Ares G2 UHD spotting scopes, and ED glass through Alpen's Apex XP, Chisos and Teton.

Distance

The Athlon Cronus G2 UHD 15x56 and the 20-60x85 spotting scopes reach farthest. At 15x a binocular wants a tripod, since about 12x is the practical limit for holding one steady by hand.

Ranging

The Alpen Apex XP and Chisos 10x42 LRF binoculars range a subject while you glass it, and the Alpen Crestone XP 7x24 and Athlon Midas G2 1 Mile 6x21 are compact laser rangefinders with OLED displays.

After dark

Luna's Quantum 6-36x50 day/night binoculars and Digital G3 day/night monoculars work in daylight and after dark, and Guide's TE thermal monoculars show heat, which finds animals in total darkness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which spotting scope should I choose?

The Ares G2 UHD 20-60x85 for the most reach, or the 15-45x65 to carry farther. Each comes angled or straight.

Are stabilized binoculars worth it?

If you observe at 12x or more, yes: that is around the practical limit for holding binoculars steady, and stabilization takes out the shake.

Which pairs suit boating?

Steiner's Navigator 7x50 and 7x30, with or without a compass, and Hawke's Endurance ED Marine 7x50 and 7x32.
