An LPVO on a carbine has to be quick at 1x and still carry holds and wind marks when you turn it up to 10x. The Athlon Ares ETR GEN2 UHD 1-10x24 is a first focal plane 1-10x LPVO with an illuminated ATMR3 MIL reticle whose holds stay true at every power, a locking elevation turret with a zero stop, and UHD extra-low dispersion glass on a 34 mm tube. Athlon rates the reticle for "Short and Mid Range Shooting for both Tactical and Hunting," and says that at 1x it "actually becomes a center dot."
Key Features
- ATMR3 MIL reticle. At low power the illuminated 10 mil quartered ring and 0.35 mil center are there for fast acquisition. As you zoom, the holdover and windage dots come into view: rows of dots 1 mil apart that reach 5 mils to each side at the 10 mil drop line.
- True at every power. In the first focal plane the reticle scales with the image, so you can hold or range at any magnification from 1x to 10x.
- Silhouette ranging tree. Above the lower post, gaps sized to a 36 in silhouette are marked for 300, 400, 500, 600 and 1,000 yards: fit the target in a gap and read the distance.
- Locking elevation, capped windage. The elevation knob pulls out to dial and pushes in to lock, and a zero stop you set under the knob stops it at zero on the way down. The windage turret is capped. Clicks are 0.1 MIL (ten move the impact 3.6 in at 100 yards), with 10 MIL per turn, 29 MIL of elevation and 25 MIL of windage.
- UHD glass. Athlon's extra-low dispersion glass gives "little or no chromatic fringe," with advanced fully multi-coated lenses and an XPL coating that protects the outer lenses from dirt, oil and scratches.
- Wide at 1x. The field of view is 117.3 ft at 100 yards at 1x and 11.7 ft at 10x, and parallax is fixed at 100 yards.
- Illumination with off positions. Numbers on the dial set the brightness, with an off position between each setting. One CR2032 battery powers it.
- Sealed one-piece tube. A 34 mm one-piece aircraft-grade aluminum tube, argon purged, waterproof, fog proof and shockproof, at 26.9 oz.
Who It's For
- AR-15 and AR-10 carbines and DMR-style rifles that need 1x up close and mil holds at 10x.
- Hunters, the other use Athlon names, where a shot can come close in cover or out across an opening.
- Choosing MIL or MOA. The ATMR2 FFP IR MOA version is the same scope in MOA: 0.25 MOA clicks, 25 MOA per turn, 100 MOA of elevation and 80 of windage, and a reticle with a 20 MOA quartered ring, a 1.2 MOA center dot, holdovers out to 700 yards and wind holds for 5 and 10 mph. Pick the unit your data and spotter use.
- If weight matters most. The Helos BTR GEN2 1-10x28 weighs 18.3 oz against this scope's 26.9 and costs less, with capped turrets, 0.5 MOA clicks and a second focal plane reticle. This Ares answers with a first focal plane reticle, 0.1 MIL clicks and an exposed elevation turret that locks.
Accessories & Compatibility
- 34 mm mounting. The tube is 34 mm, so it needs 34 mm rings or a 34 mm mount, such as Athlon's Armor Cantilever 34mm, Precision Pro Cantilever 34mm or Precision Pro QD Cantilever 34mm. Athlon's drawing gives 2.6 in of tube ahead of the turret housing and 2.5 in behind it.
