The specification that actually governs low light is the exit pupil, and Nikon gives the formula plainly: objective diameter divided by magnification. An 8x32 produces a 4.00mm exit pupil. An 8x42 produces 5.25mm. That disc of light is what your eye has to catch.

A 42mm objective has 1,385.4 square millimetres of collecting area against 804.2 for a 32mm. That is 1.72 times as much light, or 0.78 stops. Against a 30mm it is 1.96 times, just under a full stop.

Here is the gate almost every article omits. The light that reaches your retina scales with the smaller of the two pupils: the binocular's exit pupil and your own. At a 2mm daytime pupil, a 3mm pupil, or even a 4mm pupil, the 8x42 and the 8x32 deliver identical brightness. The ratio only begins to open at about 4.5mm (1.27 times), reaches 1.56 at 5.0mm, and saturates at the full 1.72 once your pupil passes 5.25mm.

Age matters less than folk wisdom suggests. Bradley and colleagues measured dark-adapted pupils across 263 subjects and found means from 7.33mm at ages 20 to 29 down to 5.17mm at 70 to 79. A viewer in their sixties still averages 5.58mm, which realises the entire advantage. Ambient light is the limiter, not your age.

Treat twilight factor and relative brightness with suspicion. Zeiss disowns its own metric in writing, pointing out that by twilight factor a 56x8 pair would score well and be totally unusable. The practical translation comes from Cape May Bird Observatory's shop, which puts the real difference at the first fifteen minutes of the day and the last fifteen minutes of the day.

Field of View: The Compact Matches or Beats the Full-Size

Field of view is an eyepiece design decision. The ISO formula for it contains no aperture term at all, which means objective diameter does not determine how much you see.
