The BT 150mm ED is a six-inch binocular telescope, two 150mm FK-61 ED doublets working at 840mm f/5.6, and Explore Scientific designs it for mounted use only. This package pairs it with the U-Mount and field tripod Explore Scientific built for it, rated to 110 lb (50 kg) against the binocular's 41.2 lb, so everything the first night needs arrives together.
Key Features
- Two 150mm FK-61 ED doublets. Each objective is an air-spaced doublet with FK-61 ED glass, which keeps false color down around bright stars, the Moon and the planets.
- 840mm at f/5.6, 42x out of the box. The supplied 20mm eyepieces give 42x over a 1.5-degree true field, wide enough for long Milky Way star fields and the large open clusters.
- A U-Mount and tripod built for this binocular. Explore Scientific purpose-built the U-Mount and tripod to give the BT 150 the strength, stability and smooth movement it needs. The fork head and its field tripod come as one matched set, so there is no head-to-tripod fit to work out.
- 110 lb (50 kg) load rating, about 2.7 times the binocular's weight, so the mount works well inside its limit rather than near it.
- EMD coatings in an argon-filled magnesium chassis. Enhanced multilayer deposition coatings on the optics, sealed in an argon-filled magnesium alloy body.
- Individual eyepiece focus. Each side focuses on its own, so you set your diopter once, and the interpupillary distance adjusts from 62 to 76mm.
- Dew shields and a sighting device. Extendable dew shields cover the objectives, and the carry handle has a sighting device for aiming.
Ideal For
- Two-eyed deep-sky observing. Explore Scientific notes that viewing with both eyes is more natural and comfortable, with less eye fatigue over a long session. Large open clusters, bright nebulae and the Milky Way at 42x are where this instrument earns its keep.
- Permanent and semi-permanent setups that want the mount settled from the first night. This is an instrument for a deck, patio, pier or observatory, not one to grab and go, so choose its observing site before it arrives.
- Long-range daytime viewing, where 150mm of aperture holds detail at distance.
Accessories & Compatibility
- Eyepieces. The holders take standard 1.25-inch eyepieces, used in matched pairs. Magnification is 840 divided by the eyepiece focal length, so a matched pair of 9mm eyepieces gives about 93x, and Explore Scientific rates the binocular for excellent image results up to 100x.
- Sold separately. Both parts are also sold on their own: the BT 150mm ED Giant Binocular and the U-Mount and Tripod for BT-150.
