Glassing a meadow edge at first or last light, you want a brighter image without giving up field of view. The Athlon Midas G2 UHD 10x50 gets there with 50 mm objectives that gather (50 ÷ 42)² = 1.4 times the light of a 42 mm, while keeping the 6.5° field (341 ft at 1,000 yards) of Athlon's Midas G2 UHD 10x42, on UHD extra-low dispersion glass.
Key Features
- Exit pupil. At 10x, the 50 mm objectives give a 5.0 mm exit pupil, against 4.2 mm for a 10x42.
- Glass and prisms. UHD extra-low dispersion glass, which Athlon says gives "little or no chromatic fringe", and ESP dielectric coating on phase-corrected BAK4 prisms that "reflects over 99% of the light to your eyes", with advanced fully multi-coated lenses and an XPL protective coating on the outer lenses.
- Eye relief. 16.9 mm, the longest of Athlon's three 50 mm Midas G2 models (the 12x50 and the Pro 12x50 give 15.0 mm), with twist-up eyecups that go fully down for eyeglasses and have an intermediate stop.
- Built for weather. Athlon calls the Midas G2 "light and slim thanks to a magnesium chassis", with a "waterproof, shockproof design and rubber armor". It is argon purged (argon, Athlon explains, gives "better fog proof capabilities" than nitrogen), focuses to 9.8 ft, and has its diopter ring on the right side, below the eyecup.
Ideal For
- Hunters, birders and nature watchers, the three applications on Athlon's sheet.
- 10x50 or 10x42? The Midas G2 UHD 10x42 has the same 6.5° field, focuses to 8.2 ft against 9.8, weighs 23.3 oz against 28.5 and costs less. The 10x50 answers with 1.4 times the light and 16.9 mm of eye relief against 15.2.
- More magnification. The Midas G2 UHD 12x50 reaches 12x at the same 28.5 oz with a 281 ft field, and the Midas G2 Pro UHD 12x50 adds Athlon's ATBR MIL reticle.
- A 10x50 for less. The Argos G2 HD 10x50 gives 17.0 mm of eye relief, a hair more, with a 304 ft field, 13 ft close focus and 31.5 oz, on HD rather than UHD glass.
Accessories & Compatibility
- Tripod. A ¼-20 tripod adapter socket under the logo plate on the hinge takes the Athlon Binocular Tripod Adapter, made to "mount a binocular to regular camera tripod".
