If your dope card, spotter and ballistic app all work in mils, a reticle and turrets in the same unit spare you a conversion on every shot. The Athlon Helos BTR GEN2 2-12x42 AHMR2 FFP IR MIL pairs the AHMR2 MIL reticle, a 0.3 mil red dot inside a 4 mil circle above a drop line marked every 0.5 mil from 1 to 8 mils, with 0.1 MIL clicks and locking turrets, in a first focal plane scope Athlon calls "a DMR scope ideally suited for riflemen preferring a MIL based reticle option".
Key Features
- What the AHMR2 MIL reticle is. Athlon designed it "for both hunting and shooting competitions". The 0.3 mil (1 MOA) dot is your 100-yard zero, the dots below it are wind holds in 0.5 mil steps, and the drop line "starts 1 mil below center all the way down to 8 mils with 0.5 mil hash marks in between". The 4 mil circle "provides quick aiming point at lower power", and a ladder above the bottom post ranges a whitetail buck by its 18-inch belly-to-shoulder depth, from 200 to 600 yards.
- Dial or hold in one unit. Clicks are 0.1 MIL, 10 MIL a turn, with 32 MIL of elevation and 25 MIL of windage. A hold you read as 1.5 mils is 15 clicks if you would rather dial it.
- First focal plane. Athlon's manual says the subtensions are "the same at any power", so the drop line and wind dots read true from 2x to 12x.
- Illumination. Athlon says "the illumination of the reticle provides great visibility during low light conditions". An off position sits between brightness settings, and one CR2032 battery powers it.
- Locking turrets and zero stop. Pull a turret up to dial, push it down to lock, and the zero stop returns elevation to zero.
- Built for weather. Parallax adjusts from 10 yards. Lenses are advanced fully multi-coated with an XPL outer coating, and Athlon rates the argon-purged one-piece tube waterproof, fog proof and shockproof.
Ideal For
- MIL shooters building a crossover rifle. Athlon's sheet lists short range first, then long range and hunting, and its page says locking turrets "are not just for hunting, they instill confidence in mid to long range shooters as well".
- Hunters who range in mils, using the whitetail ladder.
- MIL or MOA? The MOA version carries a different AHMR2: a center cross inside a 12 MOA circle with holdovers for every 100 yards to 700, built around hunting loads, and 0.25 MOA clicks.
- More magnification. The Helos BTR GEN2 4-20x50 APRS6 reaches 20x with Athlon's APRS6 MIL reticle and 29 MIL of elevation.
