The Maksutov-Cassegrain design folds 1900mm of focal length into a tube not much larger than a thermos, producing high magnification views from a compact, portable package. The Explore Scientific Sidara Pro 127 leverages this advantage by placing a 127mm Mak-Cassegrain on the Sidara Pro GoTo mount — creating a high-magnification planetary and lunar powerhouse with fully automated object location and tracking in a system that fits in a carry bag.
At f/15, this optical design is purpose-built for the Moon and planets. The long focal ratio and sealed optical tube produce high-contrast, sharply focused views of lunar surface detail, Jupiter's atmospheric bands, and Saturn's ring structure with a clarity that fast focal-ratio systems struggle to achieve. The corrector plate also means the optics stay clean and aligned — no collimation, no maintenance. Three included eyepieces (10mm, 25mm, and 40mm) span a useful magnification range from 48x to 190x, and the 2-inch rack-and-pinion focuser accepts premium eyepieces for future upgrades.
The Sidara Pro GoTo mount provides automated target location and tracking through both the hand controller and SkyAssist smartphone app. Battery-powered operation keeps the entire system self-contained and field-ready. The combination of Mak-Cass optics and GoTo tracking is particularly effective for planetary observation — the mount keeps Jupiter centered in the eyepiece at 190x while you study cloud belt detail, an experience that manual mounts make frustratingly difficult.
Double stars are another strength of this system. The 127mm aperture resolves pairs down to approximately 1 arc-second separation, and the GoTo database includes hundreds of showpiece doubles that the mount can locate instantly. Albireo, the Double-Double in Lyra, and Castor all become quick targets rather than star-hopping exercises.

Ideal For
Planetary and lunar enthusiasts who want high-magnification performance with GoTo convenience. The 127mm Mak-Cass design delivers views of the Moon and planets that are among the sharpest available at this price point. Balcony and urban observers benefit from the compact form factor and the GoTo mount's ability to locate objects even under light-polluted skies where visual star-hopping is impractical. Double star observers will appreciate the combination of resolving power and automated target location.
