PRS-style and long-range shooting mean holding for drop and wind, easiest on a reticle that reads the same at every magnification. Athlon pitches the Argos BTR GEN3 8-34x56 APLR11 FFP IR MOA at "someone on a budget who is looking to get into PRS or long-range shooting", and builds it around the first focal plane APLR11 MOA reticle, illuminated in full, with 1 MOA hash marks and drop lines every 5 MOA down to 50 MOA, in an 8x to 34x scope with a 56 mm objective.
Key Features
- APLR11 reticle. Athlon describes "the entire reticle illuminated with 1 moa hash mark increments and drop lines in 5 moa increment on vertical direction down to 50 moa". The 1 MOA marks also run sideways for wind and lead holds, from a 0.2 MOA floating dot that Athlon says "eliminated the concern for target obstruction".
- First focal plane. Athlon's manual says subtensions are "the same at any power": a 15 MOA hold is 15 MOA at 8x or at 34x.
- Turrets and zero stop. Clicks are 0.25 MOA, four to the inch at 100 yards, with 25 MOA a turn and 45 MOA of elevation and windage. The zero stop works on elevation; the manual notes "There is no zero stop function for windage knob."
- Illumination. Numbers on the knob set the brightness, the dots between them are off positions, and one CR2032 battery powers it.
- Parallax and build. Side focus works from 15 yards to infinity. Lenses are advanced fully multi-coated with an XPL outer coating. The one-piece 30 mm aircraft-grade aluminum tube is argon purged, which Athlon's sheet says gives "better fog proof capabilities" than nitrogen, and Athlon rates it waterproof, fog proof and shockproof.
Ideal For
- New PRS and long-range shooters, the buyer Athlon names.
- MIL shooters. The APRS11 FFP IR MIL version has 0.1 MIL clicks and 13 MIL of travel.
- More elevation in a smaller scope. The Argos BTR GEN3 6-24x50 APLR11 carries the same reticle with 60 MOA of travel against 45, parallax from 10 yards and 30.3 oz against 32, for less. The 8-34x56 answers with its 34x top end and a 56 mm objective, which gathers (56 ÷ 50)² = 1.25 times the light.
- Bench shooting. The Argos BTR GEN3 10-40x56 ABLR4 offers 1/8 MOA clicks in the second focal plane.
Accessories & Compatibility
- Rings. The 30 mm tube takes 30 mm scope rings.
- Elevation and bases. Athlon's manual says the reticle comes centered from the factory, so on a flat base about half of the 45 MOA lies above your zero. For more, the manual points to "an offset 20+ MOA scope rail".
