The classic marine 7x50 is superb glass at dusk, but at better than two pounds it tends to live in a locker instead of around your neck. The Steiner Military-Marine 8x30 answers the day-sail problem: the same rugged, always-in-focus Steiner build at about 17 ounces, light enough to keep in hand for a full day on the water, a kayak trip, or a fly-in where every ounce in the bag counts. A wide 390 ft field of view at 1000 yards makes it easy to find a channel marker, follow a bird, or sweep a shoreline, and 8x is enough magnification to read the detail that matters.
The focus system is pure Steiner marine. There is no center wheel to turn. You set each eyepiece to your own eyes once, and Sports-Auto-Focus holds everything from mid-distance out to the horizon sharp with no further adjustment, so you raise the glass and it is already there. The trade-off runs two ways. Fixed focus does not reach close range, so this is a distance tool rather than a near-field one, and at a 3.75 mm exit pupil the 8x30 gives up real low-light ability to the 50 mm models. This is a bright-conditions, weight-first glass, not a night-navigation one.
What it does not give up is toughness. A Makrolon polycarbonate chassis carries Steiner's Floating Prism System on shock-absorbing mounts, the NBR Long Life rubber armor grips securely with wet hands, and the sealed body is rated to survive an 11 G impact and full waterproofing. Fully Coated High-Contrast optics hold detail and cut glare off the water. This is the compact member of the line Steiner built its military and marine reputation on, made to be dropped on a deck and rained on rather than babied.
Key Features
- Light enough to carry all day. At 17.1 oz with a wide 390 ft field, this is the Military-Marine you actually keep around your neck, with enough magnification to read channel markers and scan a shoreline.
- Sports-Auto-Focus. Set each eyepiece to your eyes once and the view stays sharp from mid-distance to the horizon, with no center-focus wheel to turn. Raise the glass and the target is already in focus.
- Fully Coated High-Contrast optics. Steiner's high-contrast optical system cuts glare off the water and holds detail in bright marine and field conditions.
- Built to be dropped and rained on. A Makrolon polycarbonate housing with NBR Long Life rubber armor, rated to 11 G impact and waterproof for life on deck.
Who It's For
- Boaters and coastal travelers who want real Steiner ruggedness without the weight of a 50 mm marine glass.
- Day-trippers, paddlers, and packers for whom every ounce in the bag matters.
If you glass mostly at dawn, dusk, or after dark, the Steiner Military-Marine 7x50 gathers far more light. For extra reach on big water, the Steiner Military-Marine 10x50 pulls distant detail closer.
