Thirty yards into a woodlot, a warbler moving through the leaves gives you a second or two to find it. The Alpen Apex XP 8x42 ED covers 426 feet at 1,000 yards, 86 feet more than the Apex XP 10x42, and pairs that wider field with ED glass and PXA phase-coated BaK-4 roof prisms.
Key Features
- A wide 8x field. The view spans 426 feet at 1,000 yards (142 m at 1,000 m), so a moving bird has more room before it leaves the view. The 5.3 mm exit pupil is larger than the 10x42's 4.2 mm, which keeps the image brighter as the light fades.
- ED glass. Alpen builds the XP around an extra-low dispersion optical system, which it says cuts stray light and keeps color fringes from forming, for true-color views.
- Coated roof prisms. The BaK-4 roof prisms carry PXA phase coating, which Alpen credits with resolution and color fidelity, and HR metallic coating for light transmission and brightness. Every lens is fully multi-coated.
- Close focus at 6.5 feet. Nearby subjects come into focus from 6.5 feet, against 8.2 feet on the 10x42.
- Built for weather. The body is waterproof to 1 m for 30 minutes and nitrogen-filled, so the lenses do not fog up inside when the temperature changes.
- Set up for glasses wearers. Twist-up eyecups set the right eye distance with or without eyeglasses, and a diopter ring evens out the difference between your eyes.
Ideal For
- Woodland birders who work close, quick birds such as warblers, where a wider field makes them easier to find.
- Hunters glassing timber and field edges at first and last light, when the 5.3 mm exit pupil keeps the view brighter than a 10x42's.
- Hikers and travelers who want a 42 mm binocular at 24 ounces.
- Owners of the Apex 8x42 moving up to ED glass. Alpen gives both the same 426-foot field and 6.5-foot close focus, and the XP adds the ED optical system.
Accessories & Compatibility
- Tripod mounting: a threaded socket under the cap at the end of the center hinge takes a binocular tripod adapter (adapter and tripod not included).
