Its uncompromising optical design features two top-grade SD lenses and one high-refractive index ED lens in the convex lens, paired with high-quality lanthanum glass for the concave lens. This advanced configuration offers exceptional aberration correction, far surpassing the conventional VSD100F3.8, ensuring extraordinarily sharp, beautiful, and uniform star images from the center to the edge of the large format 44 x 33mm as well as the 35mm full size. The VSD90SS excels as both an astrograph and a visual observation tool, offering wide-field star observation and high-magnification planetary views.

The innovative 5-group, 5-element design, featuring two SD lenses, provides extremely high-level correction for aberration. This advanced design focuses on axial chromatic aberration correction, utilizing newly developed high-performance lanthanum-based glass. The use of two nearly identical SD lenses is a novel approach that significantly reduces color deterioration and star image distortion due to focus and squaring shifts. This results in superior image formation and peripheral performance compared to the VSD100F3.8, ensuring stable and user-friendly shooting results from capture to image processing.

Significant improvements in peripheral light intensity set the VSD90SS apart. The rack and pinion focuser and increased diameter of the rear lens group eliminate the vignetting issues seen in the previous VSD100F3.8 model. The VSD90SS virtually eliminates vignetting caused by the optical system and prevents non-axisymmetric flares from light diffraction. With ample peripheral illumination, it maintains rich gradation at the edges of the field of view and simplifies peripheral illumination correction during post-processing. Note that vignetting may still occur depending on the camera body or mount used.

The VSD90SS also excels in visual observation across low to high magnifications. It provides a very flat image surface at low magnification and wide field of view, delivering sharp images across the entire field with high-quality eyepieces. With a multi-wavelength Strehl ratio of 96.7% at the center, the VSD90SS exceeds the performance of the highly regarded SD81SII, making it suitable for detailed high-magnification observations of planets and other celestial objects.

For added convenience, the VSD90SS is compatible with the ZWO EAF for automated focusing. This combination ensures precise, effortless focusing, enhancing both the astrophotographic and visual observation experiences.
