Study the rich details of the sun's prominence using Daystar Filters Solar Scout 60mm f/15.5 H-alpha Achro Solar Telescope. Optically, this is an achromatic doublet refractor which corrects spherical and chromatic aberrations to produce accurate color rendition without distortion across the entire field of view. Included with the optical tube assembly is the Quark Jr. solar filter system, specifically tuned for prominence viewing. Prominences, a detail of the chromosphere projected against the blackness of space behind the sun, are seen with improved contrast due to the filter's narrower bandpass versus a wider bandpass filter tuned for conventional chromosphere surface viewing.
The Quark Jr. is an all-in-one hydrogen-alpha filter engineered to eliminate unnecessary components, which reduces the size and weight and enables it to fit in a compact form factor that flows seamlessly with the form and contour of the optical tube. In addition to the tunable H-alpha filter, the Quark also functions as a 4.3x Barlow lens with a two-element lens system that is designed to be telecentric, which flattens the field of view and reduces parallax, and features optical coatings that are optimized for the 656nm H-alpha wavelength. This design enables the use of nighttime telescopes for solar viewing, so it can be removed from the Scout OTA and inserted and used in many traditional telescopes with the addition of required adapters that are available separately.
The Solar Scout is offered here as an OTA-only option, so a mount and tripod are required for proper use. Daystar includes a Vixen-style dovetail plate to be compatible with many mounts, and a 1/4"-20 socket on the plate allows it to be directly attached to many photo, video, or field tripods. Also included is a solar finder for safe alignment during observation, and a hard carrying case to protect it when it's not being used.
Optical Tube
- 60mm aperture keeps the overall diameter narrow for easier handling
- Slow f/15.5 focal ratio
- 930mm focal length produces a moderate magnification potential
- Refractor-style light path is sturdy and requires little maintenance—ideal for off-the-grid observations
- Achromatic doublet lens design corrects spherical and chromatic aberration to produce accurate color fidelity without distortion across the entire field of view
- Sturdy and precise helical focuser has no backlash and won't rotate eyepiece/imaging rig to ensure optical alignment and orientation
- Carbon fiber optical tube reduces weight without sacrificing strength, and resists the expansion/contraction caused by temperature fluctuations that can cause internal lenses to move out of alignment, affecting image quality and focusing ability
Prominence Quark
- Hydrogen-alpha bandpass
- Integrated 12mm blocking filter
- 16mm clear filter aperture
- Tuned to 0.8-0.6Å for viewing prominence details
