Eliminate Newton’s Rings for Crystal-Clear Solar Imaging

Struggling with Newton’s Rings degrading your images? Say goodbye to frustrating wave-like interference! The DayStar Interference Eliminator (C-Mount) provides a precise and effortless fix—eliminating interference without losing focus, alignment, or image quality.

Features

  • Eliminates Newton’s Rings & Interference Fringes
Removes unwanted wave patterns in monochromatic imaging using a precision tilt mechanism—so you no longer need to rely on post-processing fixes.
  • Maintains Focus & Sensor Alignment
The tilt function keeps the sensor’s center stationary, ensuring no unwanted shifts in focus, framing, or vignetting.
  • Seamless Integration with Your Setup
Compatible with Pt. Grey, Lumenera, Imaging Source, and other CCD/CMOS cameras for effortless attachment—no complex modifications required.
  • Optimized for Long Focal Ratio Systems
Designed for F/30+ telescope configurations and DayStar solar filters, ensuring peak performance in narrowband imaging.
  • Universal C-Thread Compatibility
Standard 1-32 UN male/female C-thread fits most astrophotography and scientific imaging equipment for a hassle-free setup.
  • No Extra Spacers Required for C-Mount Cameras
Built-in spacing maintains the 17.5mm back focus requirement for C-mount cameras—plug and play, no extra adapters needed.
  • Compatible with CS-Mount Cameras
If using a CS-mount camera, a 5mm spacer is required to achieve proper back focus.
  • Adjustable Tilt with ±5° Range
Fine-tune the angle to eliminate interference without over-tilting, preserving even field illumination across the sensor.
  • Lightweight, CNC-Machined Aluminum Design
Weighing just 0.1kg (0.2 lbs), this high-precision, durable build supports cameras up to 3.5kg (7.7 lbs) without adding unnecessary weight.

Why You Need the DayStar Interference Eliminator (C-Mount)

Capturing perfect solar, planetary, and scientific images requires precision, but interference fringes like Newton’s Rings can ruin even the best shots. Whether you’re using a C-mount monochrome CCD/CMOS camera for astrophotography, lab imaging, or industrial applications, these frustrating wave-like patterns degrade image quality and demand time-consuming post-processing corrections.

The DayStar Interference Eliminator is designed for imaging professionals and researchers who need a plug-and-play solution to eliminate interference at capture—without shifting focus, alignment, or image sharpness. Unlike DIY fixes that compromise image quality, this precision-engineered tool integrates seamlessly into your optical setup, preserving fine details across solar, planetary, and laboratory imaging.

By tilting the camera just enough to change the angle of incidence, it disrupts internal reflections and eliminates interference patterns at the source—so you can focus on imaging, not fixing.

What Causes Newton’s Rings?

When imaging in monochromatic light, such as Hydrogen Alpha (Hα) solar imaging, nearly parallel light waves enter the camera and can internally reflect inside the sensor or optical train. This results in interference fringes, also known as Newton’s Rings—a wavy pattern of light and dark bands that degrade image quality.

The DayStar Interference Eliminator solves this by tilting the camera just enough to change the angle of incidence, disrupting the reflections without shifting focus or vignetting the image.

How Tilting Eliminates Newton’s Rings

Newton’s Rings occur because parallel light waves interfere with each other inside the image sensor, creating repeating bright and dark bands. The DayStar Interference Eliminator tilts the camera just enough to change the angle of incidence, meaning the light no longer enters the sensor at a perpendicular angle.

This slight tilt disrupts the uniform internal reflections inside the optical path, breaking up the interference pattern and allowing for a clean, evenly illuminated image. By keeping the sensor’s center stationary, focus and framing remain unchanged while the interference is reduced or eliminated.

Back Focus & Compatibility

The DayStar Interference Eliminator (C-Mount) is designed to work with a 17.5mm back focus distance from the male C-thread to the camera sensor.

  • For C-mount cameras: No additional spacers are needed—just attach and adjust.
  • For CS-mount cameras: A 5mm spacer is required to achieve proper back focus.
  • If your setup deviates significantly from 17.5mm, tilting the camera may cause boresight misalignment or focus shift, so adjustments may be needed.

How to Adjust the Tilt for Best Results

  • Loosen the thumbscrews slightly—do not remove them.
  • Gently slide the two halves apart to tilt the camera.
  • Take a test image—if interference patterns are still present, increase the tilt slightly.
  • Tilt only as much as needed—over-tilting may cause focus loss at the top and bottom of the image.
  • If maximum tilt does not fully eliminate the interference, try adjusting in the opposite direction for better results.

Tilt Balance for Fast Focal Ratio Systems

If using a telescope with a fast focal ratio (f/10 or lower), tilting the camera too far may cause a loss of sharpness at the top and bottom of the image.

  • Start with minimal tilt and increase slowly while taking test images.
  • If maximum tilt is needed, try tilting in the opposite direction to see if it produces a better balance.
  • If some residual fringes remain, use flat field calibration to correct minor variations.

In Extreme Cases: Additional Processing May Be Needed

The DayStar Interference Eliminator significantly reduces or eliminates Newton’s Rings, but in rare cases, some residual interference may remain. If this happens, you can further refine your image using flat field calibration or image stacking techniques to achieve perfect results.

Supports Heavy Camera Setups

  • Built from CNC-machined aluminum, the DayStar Interference Eliminator supports cameras up to 3.5kg (7.7 lbs).
  • Compatible with DSLRs, cooled CCD/CMOS cameras, and cameras with filter wheels.
  • Provides rigid, secure support to prevent flex or misalignment in long-exposure imaging.
