How to choose a Cronus ATS Pro thermal scope
Three choices
Three choices narrow the lineup. First the form factor: the 25P-250 and 35P-400 are compact Picatinny-mount scopes at 17.8 oz and 19.7 oz, while the 35-400, 35L-400, 50-640 and 50L-640 are full-size scopes with 30 mm tubes that mount in standard rings and carry Athlon's 1440x1080 display. Then the sensor: every model uses a 12-micron sensor, at 256x192, 400x300 or 640x480, and the two 640 models carry the most sensitive rating, ≤20 mK. Last, the laser rangefinder, built into the 35L-400 and 50L-640.
Detection ratings
Detection figures are Athlon's own ratings: 1,400 yards for the 25P-250, 1,950 yards for the 35P-400 and 2,620 yards for the full-size models. Detection is the distance at which a heat source shows up, not the distance at which you can tell what it is.
What the lineup shares
- Battery life rated at 9+ hours on the Picatinny models and 10+ hours on the 30 mm scopes, with USB-C charging.
- Seven color palettes, video recording and Wi-Fi with Athlon's app, plus Bluetooth on the 30 mm models.
- A ballistic calculator on every model.
- IP67 waterproofing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Picatinny or 30 mm tube?
The Picatinny models are the lightest, smallest and most affordable scopes in the lineup. The 30 mm scopes mount like a conventional riflescope in standard rings and add the larger 1440x1080 display.
Can I hunt with a thermal scope?
Rules on thermal optics for hunting differ by state, species and season, and some states restrict them, so check with your state wildlife agency before you hunt with one.
For every model compared, read Athlon Cronus ATS Thermal Lineup: Which Model Is Right for You?, and if you are weighing a rangefinder model, see whether a thermal scope with a rangefinder is worth it.
