Is the DayStar Solar Scout 80mm Right for You?
This dedicated solar telescope is ideal for:
- Observers focused on prominences – Designed to reveal arches, loops, and limb activity, delivering a view that white-light filters cannot achieve.
- Users who value precision tuning – The wing shift knob provides fine adjustments for optimizing prominence visibility and detail.
- Anyone comfortable with a powered filter system – Requires USB power (5V, 1.5A); a portable battery pack is recommended for remote viewing.
- Those looking for an adaptable setup – The Quark module can be used with other telescopes, and optional adapters allow for 2” eyepieces and DSLR/mirrorless cameras.
Why Choose the DayStar Solar Scout 80mm?
The DayStar Solar Scout 80mm Prominence Model is designed for solar astronomers who want to explore dynamic limb activity with precision manual tuning and USB-powered stability. Unlike other solar telescopes, the Solar Scout Prominence model is ready to go out of the box, offering clear, high-contrast views of prominences and flares.
The 1400mm focal length and 22mm clear aperture ensure detailed views of large-scale prominence structures, whether you’re observing delicate plasma streams or intricate arches. The wing shift knob allows fine-tuning to highlight different prominence layers and details along the limb.
For optimal performance, the Quark filter stabilizes in just 5-6 minutes after power-up or adjustment, keeping your view sharp and on-band. The built-in LED indicator ensures you’re always informed—yellow means warming up, green indicates it’s ready to observe, and red signals a power issue. The telescope performs best within a temperature range of 40°F to 100°F, so using it outside these conditions may affect tuning stability.
Designed with portability in mind, the lightweight carbon fiber construction makes it easy to transport for travel, outreach events, and remote observations. The included hard case ensures safe transport, and the Vixen-style dovetail foot allows for secure mounting on tripods and equatorial mounts. The interchangeable DayStar Quark module adds versatility, letting you use it with other telescopes for expanded observation capabilities.
While the Solar Scout includes everything needed for immediate observation, a diagonal (pictured) is not included. If you plan to use 2” eyepieces or a DSLR/mirrorless camera, optional adapters are available to customize your setup further.
With USB-powered tuning for stable on-band performance, this telescope ensures consistent, high-quality imagingof solar prominences in any observing environment. Whether you're a dedicated solar observer or an astrophotographer looking to capture intricate limb structures, the DayStar Solar Scout 80mm Prominence Model delivers professional-grade performance in a lightweight, modular design.
